Hello! Nats here, I'm Zeph and Dali's mum and I am a self confessed baby name hoarder. Surely I'm not the only one who had a secret list of baby names in a hidden notebook from the age of 15?! I remember reeling lists of names for my future children off when I was at school and I'm still vibing on some of my choices then 15+ years later.
People are so funny about sharing names that inspire them or that they'd like to give to their unborn / unconceived children. Perhaps they're worried people will think they're 'a crazy baby lady', or could it be the fear of names being ridiculed or rejected by those who's opinion they hold sacred? Either way I'm proudly part of the share and don't care club and I revel in the notion that people might not like my choices.
So here's a list of baby names to inspire you in 2021...I've had some of these written down forever, others are newer. I'm not that sure if you'd categorize them as quirky / unusual / hipster / classic or any specific group, people seem to like grouping names by the type of person they hope those small people will grow up to be...but they just sound good to me!
A is for Alba (Unisex) Alba means sunrise of dawn in Italian.
B is for Bowie (Unisex) Inspired by David Bowie
C is for Chance (Boys) Honey I'm still free, take a chance on me. Or Chance the Rapper, either way it's rad
D is for Della (Girls) A cute alternative to Stella and was second in line for Dali's first name
E is for Ezra (Unisex) Another music one, inspired by Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend. LOVE for a boy or a girl
F is for Fia (Girls) Dali's middle name, Irish for wild and Italian for fire. She's our little Irish Italian wildfire
G is for Gabi (Unisex) A cute shortened version of Gabriel who was the little boy I nannied for when I was 18 (and writing all those lists)
H is for Honour (Girls) Does weirdly remind me of my school motto (Courage & Honour) but also a cute name with a strong meaning
I is for Iggy (Unisex) Another music inspired name that's cute
J is for Jones (Boys) We've been digging surnames as first names for a while and this one is a total vibe
K is for Kitty (Girls) Another from my days as a nanny. Kitty was a baby I looked after who used to call me 'poo poo Nat'
L is for Luca (Boys) One of our favourite Italian boys names. It comes from the Latin word for light
M is for Mac (Unisex) Inspired by the guy who makes the best music - Mac Demarco
N is for Natty (Girls) The nickname I always wanted. Only a couple of people call me it, mostly I'm Nats
O is for Oak (Boys) A simple and perfect name inspired by nature
P is for Peonie (Girls) An alternative spelling to Peony to make it a little less floral and a little more modern...but still pretty
Q is for Queenie (Girls) An old school girls name fit for a tiny queen
R is for Rowdy (Boys) James has always said no to this one, but I think it would be dope to have a little Rowdy boy
S is for Sidney (Unisex) Inspired by a trip to Australia when Zeph was small. An alternative spelling to one of our favourite cities that we hope to call home one day
T is for Tovie (Girls) Saw this on a list of 'unusual' names and thought it was pretty. Could also spell it Tovi
V is for Vinny (Boys) Another old school name. Short for Vincent which means WINNING
W is for Wilder (Boys) I LOVE this name If Zeph had been a boy I really wanted her to be a little nature inspired Wilder
X is for Xander (Boys) Cute way to use an X in a name...it's the hardest one to find ideas for!
Y is for Yu (Unisex) Cute as a nickname for Yuki or Yusef and also as a short and simple full name
Z is for Zion (Boys) We debated if Dali was a boy having a Zeph and a Zion. Such a strong and bold choice and reminds me of my fave national park in America
